Kay Cummins is a metalsmith and enamelist that works in Steel and Hi-karat Gold. The combination of these two metals is uncommon and striking with a black and gold color . Bright gold pops from the black steel.

The work is edgy and urban. Steel is lightweight and very ductile. These properties let Kay create large earrings and long chain. The work looks heavy but is surprisingly light, this means jewelry is comfortable and stylish at any size. Adding Gold introduces precious metal to the steel.

Alloying combinations of pure Gold, Silver and Copper determines the karat and color of the gold.

Working the gold from ingot to sheet and cutting small pieces for layout is next.

A hot torch and 2,000 degrees are required for the gold to Bond to the steel. Balancing the heat and movement of gold is an advanced skill.

Kay studied with Chris Nelson, a Master in this process for 4 years. He died in 2017. She continues this process in her designs, honoring him and his teaching.

Kay began making jewelry in 2008. Joy and determination support her learning from Masters. Expanding knowledge and opportunity is exciting.

Kay has won accolades and taught. Her favorite thing is when her work finds it’s person.
